Community Centre Talk – All about Antarctica

On Monday 3 February 2025, from 1.30pm-2.30pm,

Come and hear Dr Ursula Rack give a talk All about Antarctica.

New Zealand, and especially Christchurch, has a long tradition with the Antarctic.

Antarctica itself is a fascinating place with lots of history, science, and an incredible wildlife.

Ursula will present pictures and items such as clothing and other material from the Antarctic and will talk about her work and experiences as lecturer, tutor,

and expedition staff in the field and on expedition cruise ships.

Ursula Rack (PhD) is a polar historian and an Adjunct Senior Fellow at Gateway Antarctica, School of Earth and Environment, University of Canterbury.  She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London and in 2018, was appointed a New Zealand Winston Churchill Memorial Fellow, for the project “How different countries, research, collect and communicate their Antarctic history.”  In 2012, Ursula was the first humanities recipient of a COMNAP (Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs) Fellowship for the project “Reconstructing historic Antarctic climate data from logbooks and diaries of the Heroic Era”.  Subsequently, she was contracted (2015 – 2017) by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) for the National Science Challenge – Deep South to gather and assess historic ship-logbooks for weather information as a basis to reconstruct climate patterns in the Southern Ocean.  Ursula publishes in English and German.  She is currently lecturing and tutoring Antarctic studies courses at the university.  Ursula has spent six seasons in the Antarctic as tutor, lecturer, and expedition staff.
