Once again, the LCM Sisters in Tonga have greatly appreciated your kind interest, thoughts, prayers and donations.
2018 has again been a very busy (and at times dramatic) year for our Tonga Community.
Early in 2018 Cyclone Gita ploughed through the Pacific, and tried its best to flatten the Kingdom of Tonga. It seems no building on Tonga was spared the effects of the cyclone, but fortunately the Sisters’ convent survived the storm. Most importantly, the Sisters and their families were safe.
After the cyclone, the Sisters have been helping the Tonga Community get back on its feet, with special works and donations – including providing drinking water and equipment to a local High School, and donations to replace damaged equipment at the Tonga Diocese.
The Sisters have recently taken delivery of a new car, which will enable them to drive easily to their various work places (each of the four Sisters work in a different place around the main island). The Sisters are very grateful for the generous donations that have been forwarded to Tonga, which enabled them to purchase this much needed vehicle.
The Sisters’ convent has recently been given an upgrade, with the installation of cyclone / security screens. Hopefully the convent will now be even more protected from the elements!
Throughout this year the Sisters’ ministries have continued, including Hospital Chaplaincy (Sister Veisinia Ha’ungatau); Prison Chaplaincy and Counselling (Sister Lusia Tupou); Assistance and Counselling at The Mango Centre working with disabled adults (Sister Helena Kivalu); and School-based Pastoral Care at Apifo’ou College (Sister Fatafehi Taufa).
In addition to their usual work, Sister Lusia went on two mission trips, and Sister Veisinia went on one mission trip, to outlying islands. The purpose of these island visits is to talk about and spread the Little Company of Mary’s Spirit and Charism beyond the main island of Tongatapu. The Sisters are particularly spreading the word and raising awareness of prayers for the dying.
Looking into the New Year… in January 2019 Sister Helena Kivalu will take her perpetual (final) vows. This is a joyous occasion for all! Many Little Company of Mary Sisters will be travelling to Tonga from all around the world to attend the ceremony and celebrations.
Wishing all a Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Holy New Year.
